Gypsies Wanderers of the World
Published in Hardcover by National Geographic Society ()
Author: Bart Mcdowell
Average review score:

Entertaining & educational for everyone!
Being of a Gypsey=Romanychal background, I recomend this wonderful book with it's fabulous photos and close to exact written story from the Lees who are true Gypsies in England that guide us thru France & Germany toward our Gypsey origins inward back to India, toward the beginning of our story of one thousand + years ago!
There are too many books that are filled with imagination and fantasy. This book is not one of those!
Stevan Romano
(Romanychal)

GYPSIES wanderers of the world
Being of part Gypsey background (Romanychal), I have seen too much literature about Gypsies from non-Gypsey writers that do not come close to reality. With this in mind, Gypsies are not ready to give & share real inside information to outsiders due to prejudice and hostility etca.
What is unique about this book is that Bart McDowell had travelled with an English-Gypsey couple as the passport to retrace the Gypsey routes through Europe back to India. While along the way noticing differences among the people with a common thread of similarity that has endured a thousand years.
This book shows the vast diversity in beautiful photographs, as well as being very well written.
This has been the very-best book I have seen about Gypsey history, politics, culture, and life!
There are too many other books filled with fiction while this one is filled with soul.

Hope in Barth's Eschatology-Interrogations and transformations beyond tragedy (Ashgate New Critical Thinking In Theology & Biblical Studies)
Published in Hardcover by Ashgate Publishing Company (February, 2001)
Author: John C. McDowell
Average review score:

Boldly going where Barth Studies have never Been Before
In the overcrowded world of Barth studies this one doesn't get lost in the crowd! This is a unique thesis - McDowell points out that eschatology and hope are central to what Barth is doing with his theology. Its not always an easy read, but definitely well worth persevering with. It has revolutionised my understanding of Barth.
Dr Helen K Bond, Aberdeen University

Author's Summary
As Jürgen Moltmann has famously argued, hope makes a difference to life and practice. Tracing this through the writings of Karl Barth, this study endeavours to call into question the paucity of critical comment on Barth's eschatology, the theological soil from which his Christian hope grows. Failing to acknowledge and do justice to his distinctively christomorphic hope, then, misses something essential in Barth's theological perspective. Yet certain tensions are identified and questioned through interaction with the use of the genre of the tragic in George Steiner, Donald MacKinnon and Friedrich Nietzsche in particular.

How to Be a Hero to Your Kids
Published in Paperback by Word Publishing (January, 1993)
Authors: Josh McDowell and Dick Day
Average review score:

Filled to the last page with loving advice!
Truly the best (and most relevant) book I have ever read on Christian Parenting. The book is filled to the brim with PRACTICAL, RELEVANT advice on how to be a successful parent, and, yes, a Hero to your kids.

Basing their thesis on five main Parenting concepts, and amply supported with Scriptural references and real-life experiences, the authors present a clear, workable strategy to really improve your parenting, in such a way that you can teach your children the lessons of life, whilst still retaining their respect and absolute love for you.

A must read for anyone who would like to gain new insights in Christian Parenting.

AWESOME book, One everyone should read
This book should be required reading for all those in counseling. Everything we are stems from our parents. Even those of us who have very little contact with our parents can learn a great deal, even if we don't have children.

This book teaches why we are the way we are and how we can overcome the wrongs that have been done us by just understanding where our feelings are coming from. As a grown adult raising children I have learned more about myself in the span of reading this one book, then I have in my whole lifetime.

I feel this book will help anyone with their walk with Christ.

Jean Paul Gaultier
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (15 February, 2001)
Authors: Colin McDowel and Colin McDowell
Average review score:

Finally a great book about Gaultier!
Although it took 25 years after Gaultier first started designing under his own name for someone to dedicate a book to him, it was well worth the wait. McDowell, as with his book on Galliano, does a lavish job on Gaultier's life and designs. The book is packed with runway photos and details about some of the collections. My only complaints about the book (and they are very minor complaints): McDowell goes into over-detail about Gaultier's life, especially up to 1976 when he first started designing his own label, making for slow reading for half of the book; a few of the photos are mislabelled with the wrong collection (mostly the couture photos); and although there are some great runway photos in the book, a lot of Gaultier's show-stopping designs in the past are not represented, and there aren't enough photos from men's collections. A great book though!

Gaultier fans--this is the book you've been waiting for!
Colin McDowell's peek into the wild world of Jean Paul Gaultier is both long overdue and well worth the wait! From his earliest childhood memories to his 2000 couture show and all points inbetween, McDowell reveals all in the same manner Gaultier designs his collections--with wit, irreverence, and style! This lavishly illustrated book has pictures and sketches (sadly, not Gaultier's own) from his most famous collections, including some rare and unusual ones. Photo coverage starts in heavily from around the 1989 collections, but earlier eighties collections are glimpsed here and there throughout the book. McDowell punctuates with notable quotes and images of Gaultier's influences, from pin-up queens to Physique Pictorial, from the great couturiers to street fashion. Smartly written and solidly designed (it even has Gaultier's nautical stripes in the end caps!) this book is a MUST for all Gaultier fans and admirers. It explains, in vivid detail, how he became the fashion icon that he is today!

Life Changing book
I recently got this book as a b-day present from a special friend. It's opened my eyes as to how I should life my (dating) life. It has a great Christian view and a few stories about people just like me and how their life has changed. I recommend this book to everyone who's a little confused about the love and dating game.

Positive reasons to wait!
Jacob Aranza has always been a great role model and spiritual mentor to me, and has recently become my Pastor! Jacob speaks from the heart and from real life experiences on the value of holiness in relationships. This is a must-read for the single Christian!

The Revolutionary War: America's Fight for Freedom
Published in Hardcover by National Geographic (June, 1967)
Author: Bart McDowell
Average review score:

Timeless!
This book is worth the time just for the beautiful pictures but the real value of it is how it brings to life the people and places in the Revolutionary War. How fortunate his children were to be taken to the various sites and told about the charactors who set our country free. What wonderful parents to make history come alive for their children. Seeing each site in a season similiar to when our ancestors experienced it was a great idea. Makes me wish I could have gone with them.

The Past Made Present
Of all the books written about the Revolutionary War this remains, for me, the most captivating. McDowell takes the reader on a journey to the historical sites directly related to the war. The weather conditions at the time and place of significance are thoroughly described along with the thoughts that were presumably felt by those who took part and some that have actually been documented. As readers follow McDowell and his family on trips through Boston Harbor, Fort Tichonderoga and other sites, one vicariously experiences the revolution which shaped our country and ultimately our lives and our future. This will enstill a better appreciation for the Revolutionary War at large and more specifically, the men and women who fought it.

See Yourself As God Sees You

See Yourself as God Sees You
This is a very good book. It teaches how God transforms us to really walk in the lord. It teaches what God's love it all about.
It teaches how God loves us. It teaches how the Holy Spirit helps us to transform to really be loving and forgiving in our walk with the lord. I recommend this Book to every Christian.

strongly recommended!
Wow, God has really helped me through this book! Anyone who's had problems knowing God for who He really is because of an unfulfilling childhood should read this! The author relates personal experiences as well as real-life situations to the context that God wants us to see ourselves as we really are in Him: lovable, valuable, and competent. So often the world, and often our influences in childhood, tell us otherwise, but this book tackles the subject of proving those lies fase w/ the truth of God's word. A true blessing!

Fashion,Fantasy & Tons of History to BOOT!
I'm mad for Colin McDowell who must be the patron saint of fashion information professionals! This book has got it all, great photos, shoe sketches, acurate history and even shoe fantasy. I love to use this book to show our students that mules are not a twentieth century invention by Candies. Please take heed this is not a weekend reader for it contains quite a bit of text but, it is great to refer to for research and for those of us who can't get enough information about shoes. If you are interested in shoe design please check out the Ferragamo section; pure candy for the eyes.

Why Wait
Published in Audio Cassette by Word Publishing (June, 1991)
Authors: Josh McDowell and D. Day
Average review score:

Well rounded arguments, great book
I read Why Wait? as a teen and it really helped me to see the reasons why teens have sex, reasons to wait and what was likely to happen to you down the road if you didn't wait until marriage. The thing I liked most about this book is that is shows you why young people are having sex. Many books will just talk about why to have sex or why you shouldn't. This book really explores the issue and gives a lot of good facts to back up the different points that are made in the book. Well worth taking the time to read no matter how old you are or what your feelings are on the subject.

By far the best book about sex for teens; title says it all
I've reviewed many books over 20 years which helps young people understand sex, and I recommend this as the best one because it features real interviews with real teenagers. The title question "Why Wait?" is answered in detail. Superb book for teens, college students, even parents, all ages. Makes an ideal gift from a parent to a child, or a friend to a friend.
